Property Description

The property and village The Old Mill House was formerly owned by the Soresby family who were canal carriers in Shardlow from the 1770's. James Soresby had a warehouse alongside the basin which he converted into a steam corn mill in 1860, but the mill was largely destroyed by fire in 1885. Following the fire three cottages were built on the site of the surviving engine house and stables, some of which were incorporated in the north side of the building. With lack of use, the canal basin became silted up and overgrown until in 1980 half of its original length was cleared by the Erewash Canal Association to provide the current 120 feet of private mooring off the Trent & Mersey canal. Two of the three cottages were combined and extended in 1980 to form the
Old Mill House.

Shardlow is a village in Derbyshire about 6 miles (9.7 km) southeast of Derby and 11 miles (18 km) southwest of Nottingham, part of the civil parish of Shardlow and Great Wilne, and the district of South Derbyshire.

An important late 18th century river port for the transshipment of goods to and from the River Trent to the Trent and Mersey Canal during its heyday from the 1770s to the 1840s it became referred to as "Rural Rotterdam" and "Little Liverpool". Today Shardlow is considered Britains most complete surviving example of a canal village with over 50 Grade II listed buildings and a large number of surviving public houses within the designated Shardlow Wharf Conservation Area. The village also includes a post office/general store and a highly regarded primary school.

For the commuter the national motorway network, Parkway railway station and East Midlands airport are all readily accessible, as is Derby on the 24 hour running Skylink bus service which connects to the airport.
