The one aspect of this job I really love is the capacity of some homes to surprise me. Parc Hendy is a pleasant enough road, full of well kept homes but seeming to offer little out of the ordinary; until I arrived at number 14. Marked out from its neighbours by something as seemingly insignificant as a small porch over the front door, it is the way this has been constructed with obvious care and attention to detail that warmed me to this home before i’d even stepped inside.
The front garden of the home has been given over to lavish block paving, providing generous parking for several vehicles yet remaining attractive, giving thanks also to the extensive raised beds of crushed slate and various planters around the perimeter, giving beautiful splashes of colour. A small flight of steps lead up to the porch and from where we access the twin opening outer front doors, which in turn lead into the small outer lobby. This provides shelter from the elements and is a handy repository for wet coats and shoes before the semi glazed UPVC front door allows us into the main hall.
This is floored in a very high quality dark oak wood effect laminate which really does look the part. Some laminates look just like what they are, a cheaper substitute for the real thing but here, you are hard pressed to distinguish it from the genuine article. The stairs lead up in front of you while to the left is a door into the main lounge.
The ‘wood effect’ floor continues in here, giving a warm and welcoming feel to the room, which is kept bright and airy by the large picture window overlooking the front. The main focal point of this room is without doubt the exposed brick fireplace with its working log burning stove. Although the home is fully centrally heated and a fire such as this is not really necessary for heating purposes, nothing quite compares with the comfort provided by a flickering flame on a cold winter’s night.
A door at the rear of the lounge opens into the kitchen/dining room with its attractive ceramic faux slate floor. I sometimes smile at house descriptions that wax lyrical about the ‘well proportioned dining kitchen’ when what they actually mean is a quite acceptable kitchen that has been utterly compromised by sticking a table at one end, producing a room that is fit for neither purpose. Here however we find a different story. At the dining end of the room we find sufficient space for a full sized six seat table that in no way encroaches into the kitchen, making this a genuine dual purpose space.
The kitchen follows the classic ‘U’ shape and incorporates an integrated fridge, tower oven and automatic washing machine. The annually serviced gas combi central heating boiler is located in one of the overhead cupboards for ease of access. Above the sink there is what used to be a window prior to the extension being added, providing a pleasing view into the second lounge.
A large archway from the dining room opens into the second lounge, featuring a continuation of the practical and attractive ceramic floor. This is a confusing room, in that it manages to feel cosy and welcoming while being flooded with light from not only the large French doors and their adjacent window but also from the velux roof lights set in the ceiling. To one side of the room a door reveals a downstairs cloakroom with basin and lavatory (handy for summer bbq season), but it also doubles up as a utility room housing the deep freeze and tumble drier.
Stepping through the French doors onto the wooden decking we find ourselves in an enclosed and very private rear garden where, beyond the decking is an open sided summer house, large enough for a couple of full sized settees and providing the perfect venue for relaxing after a long day. The drinks fridge in the corner is just an added bonus which sadly may not remain after the sale….
The rest of the garden is given to lawn, while a small flight of steps return us to the drive along the side of the home. This is adequately wide for a car to pass through and while there used to be a garage, (it was demolished to make way for the extension) a simple car port could be erected and would provide all the protection necessary to keep your pride and joy safe.
Returning indoors and climbing the stairs we find ourselves facing the bathroom. This, although not huge contains everything you could want and does so beautifully. The quality of the fittings show no expense has been spared, from the ceramic floor and tiled walls, heated towel rail/radiator, to the ‘P’ shaped bath with its mains powered shower over, the standard of the installation and its condition are all you could ask for.
Adjacent to here is the rear facing bedroom. This is a very comfortably sized double bedroom, easily holding a computer desk, bedside tables and a huge free standing wardrobe, while still leaving floor space untouched. The whole is kept bright courtesy of the large picture window overlooking the rear garden.
Moving to the front of the home, we come to the bête noir of the three bedroom semi. Or being honest, the usually two and a half bedroom semi. Here, however this is not actually true. Although a small section of the floor is lost to the rise of the stair well, where this occurs has been cleverly incorporated into a cabin bed, making a virtue out of a potential problem. It also provides useful storage space beneath the bed, assuaging the need for additional furniture, though there remains enough space for a small wardrobe and chest of drawers.
Finally and also facing the front of the home, we find the master bedroom. The storage needs of this room are catered for by a large set of mirror fronted wardrobes which also serve to make the room appear even bigger.
