Sometimes we find a home so out of the ordinary that we don't know where to begin. It was built originally as a manse to the local church; in those far off days the clergy must have lived in no mean degree of splendour. Massively constructed of solid sandstone blocks, in the 21st century it has no need of such trappings as cavity wall insulation and why would it? The walls are a good 18 inches thick and if the cold can penetrate those, global warming has failed to ward off another ice age and we're all doomed.
In its original form, there was a terrace of 3 staff cottages attached to one side of the main house. These have since been converted into a single larger dwelling but remains semi-detached (on the north side of the property). However, before you start having fears of overhearing and loss of privacy, this is not visible from any window in the home and the previously mentioned thickness of the walls render noise problems an irrelevance. There is another dwelling of more modern construction attached to another elevation (west) which has been lived in by the previous owners of Bryntirion for the 14 years of its current owner’s tenure.........Are you following this? There will be a short test later :) So, what we have here is a configuration of 'L' shaped buildings with Bryntirion making up the centre piece.
We approach the home up a private drive (100’ ft up off the main road) and swing into a broad block paved drive that skirts the front of the building and reveals the enormous garage complex. Although this appears as a double garage it is in fact significantly larger and provides an excellent workshop and storage facility. To the side of the driveway is a deceptively large garden given over to lawn and surrounded by mature trees, with a pond and timber shed. Indeed, space enough for a variety of uses should gardening hold no appeal.
The imposing front door sits centrally in the massive stone frontage and gives access to the long laminate floored inner hall. Immediately on the left is the parlour (sitting room) with double aspect windows featuring the wooden shutters that kept the worst of the 19th century winters at bay. There is also what appears to be a Victorian fireplace, now blocked up but almost certainly possible to re-commission.
Opposite here is the ground floor bedroom. This overlooks the front drive and features massive fitted cupboards and an en-suite comprising hand basin, toilet and walk in shower with water supplied from the pressurised hot water system.
Moving down and across the hall brings us to the second reception room. I use the formal term because there are so many and their possible uses so interchangeable it avoids confusion. This mirrors the parlour/sitting room in size and offers a single similar huge storage cupboard in one alcove. This was once possibly the dining room, given its proximity to the kitchen but now contains a full-sized pool table. As I said, the possibilities are almost endless.... The back wall which once housed a window has been removed and replaced with a full width archway.
This leads into an enormous lounge-dining room which stretches the full length of the home and is big enough to accommodate both roles with ease. It is a very light room, having large windows allocated to each half.
Across the hall once more, we see beneath the stairs a mysterious door leading down a stone flight of steps into the large cellar beneath the 'pool' room, which could be turned into an amazing cinema or other type of room (but will require a professional builder to advise on what could be done here) and then the door into the kitchen.
All that this needs to be complete is Mrs Patmore preparing something special for the guests of Downton Abbey. The kitchen is well equipped, and so, in keeping with the general feel of the home, simply feels ‘right'. Some may feel it would benefit from an update, but that would be at the risk of destroying the ambiance. Your choice.
Beyond the kitchen is a small utility room containing the usual labour saving machinery & door way through to a downstairs toilet and external rear door to the back yard.
Upstairs, via a 180 degree turned staircase (with mid landing and rearward facing window) we arrive in a large landing area, leading off to the 4 bedrooms, airing cupboard (housing the hot water immersion tank) and bathroom.
The bathroom has been tastefully re-designed and decorated in a sympathetic Victorian style with metro tiles and roll top bath, with mixer telephone shower tap. Though no separate shower is installed here, there is room and with ease it could be retrofitted should that be desirable.
3 of the bedrooms are double sized, with the 4th smaller room, adequate for a single bed/ wardrobe but presently employed as a study.
Overall a delightful home, versatile & unique ownership proposition that will suit the new prospective owner well for years to come.
