Within a quiet pocket of Stratford, at the end of a sweet and uniform Victorian terrace, is this beautifully realised contemporary home. Re-imagined from the ground up with a keen eye for design and quality of materials, the owners have created a modern sanctuary in the heart of east London.
The house is situated moments from Maryland overground station, with the new Elizabeth Line trains speeding you to Liverpool Street and The City in around 10 minutes. In the other direction, you're only a short car or bus journey or bike ride to burgeoning Forest Gate or leafy Wanstead; providing the perfect antidote to urban life, with ample green space and a wide range of independent eateries and shops.
The current owners have lovingly renovated the house with great style and aplomb. From reclaimed floorboards sourced from a Norwegian church to a small bedroom fitted-out as a designated dressing room – when it comes to attention to detail and ingenious use of space, this home has it all.
Added to the cosmetic alterations, there are some inherent architectural benefits to the house. For example, the living room downstairs and front bedroom on the first floor are considerably larger than the others on the street since it's at the end of the terrace. This positioning also makes the angles within the house unusual, but wonderfully so, which has enabled design decisions such as the positioning of the fireplaces. These elements combined, set the tone and atmosphere for a home that embodies the best of the moment, yet acknowledges and respects its Victorian ancestry.
We are really going to miss living on Torrens Road. More than anything we have loved making the house a home that we have been able to enjoy with friends and family.
The ground floor living area leading out onto the garden is perfect for get-togethers and has been the setting for many summer barbecues (and the odd kitchen disco). Our favourite part of the house is the loft – it's such a light and peaceful space which completely transformed the way we live here.
Our favourite things locally include weeknight cinema at Stratford Picturehouse, Friday happy hour at Here East and lazy Sunday afternoons in the Forest Tavern. We’ve also loved discovering the restaurants, bars and cafes that have opened over the last couple of years in the East Village – the Dark Horse, Santi and Tina We Salute You are firm favourites.
The transport links from Stratford and Stratford International are fantastic and having Westfield on our doorstep has also been a real bonus.
The EPC gives a current Energy Efficiency Rating: D & Environmental Impact Rating: E
Part of the London Borough of Newham, the house falls into Council Tax Band C. In 2018/2019 that worked out at £1,119.
The intelligent design of the garden makes it more like an extension to the house. A continuous flow of the grey, slate tiles, from the kitchen and into the patio, creates a seamless divide, and the smart, Cubola Awning means you have an extra ‘room’ that is usable for much of the year.
Set between Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the Wanstead Wetlands, there is a diverse range of outdoor activities on your doorstep.
London City Airport is reachable via car or the Docklands Light Railway in around 30 minutes.
