Property Description

If you're looking for some divine intervention in your property search this 4 bedroom converted chapel manages to bridge the gap between impressive space and cosy character, with its superb entertaining space and versatile layout.

The Property
Whether you're a family, like to entertain, or have one eye on retirement, the way the property has been converted gives you plenty of options to live either predominantly on the ground floor and use the first-floor accommodation for guests, or take the master-bedroom for yourselves and allow the rest of the family to use the ground floor. There's an abundance of character features from the moment you walk in. There is the option of two front entrances. Coming through the entrance porch, you're greeted with an original tiled floor and a large stained-glass panel above casting a glow between the porch and the inner hall. There's room to hang coats and whilst doors open into the main reception room, straight ahead takes you into an attractive roomy entrance hall with galleried landing and a more contemporary feel. An attractive timber staircase leads up to the first floor and there are some handy niches for your furniture such as a desk or blanket box.

Pretty leaded windows help circulate the light into the hall, and the renewed pine floor flows throughout the ground floor giving a practical and hardwearing surface under-foot. The kitchen / dining room is nicely fitted with cream shaker style units and wooden worktops with ceramic sink unit, giving a nice country feel. There's space and plumbing for a washing machine and one of the corner cupboards could be adapted to fit a dishwasher as the plumbing is in place. A useful alcove has plenty of room for a sizeable fridge / freezer. Mullion leaded windows let in the daylight from the front and recessed downlighters to the ceiling give a more modern feel. There are three bedrooms on the ground floor, all enjoying views at the rear over the adjoining fields each with their own character such as timber panelling, brick fireplace and bookshelves. The adjoining bathroom is a lovely size and has been nicely modernised with white suite comprising panelled bath with shower and shower screen over, pedestal wash hand basin with wall light and shaver socket over, and WC. The tiling is modern and neutral and some exposed stone wall has been left to link the more modern bathroom back to the period nature of the building.

Now, if you really want to wow your guests, the main living room is a sight to behold. Formed in the original Chapel as opposed to the turn of the century Sunday School, a later addition at the rear includes beautiful stained-glass windows that light up in the morning sun, whilst a multi-fuel burner below gives you a cosy focal point on cooler evenings. Whether you want room for a grand piano, or 10-seater sofa there is definitely no shortage of space. Double doors to the front give you a handy additional access, especially for those larger pieces of furniture that this room can definitely take. The open vaulted ceiling has concealed lighting, and the original pulpit is a nice feature – perhaps a spot to release your inner-performer as the acoustics are reputed to be rather good!

Once on the first floor, the galleried landing overlooks the entrance hall below, and there's a substantial area above the entrance porch which would make a lovely display area for your prettiest things. Conversely, all those things you want to hide away have their own home in a useful under-eaves attic space extending across the rear of the property and accessed from the landing. The master bedroom is a lovely size and has the benefit of the tops of the arched mullion windows from below. The timber flooring adds to the feeling of space, and the decorative timber mouldings in the ceiling echo those in the ground floor bedrooms. Likewise, the original cast iron roof struts follow through from the landing into the bedroom. There's a built-in wardrobe to one corner and diagonally opposite an en-suite shower-room has a WC, wash hand basin and electric shower with tray. The master bedroom suite is effectively self-contained on the first floor so would be perfect for guests.

Outside
Across the front of the property is attractive riven paving with adjacent flower beds and low stone wall with arrowhead railings. Historical date stones from the Chapel's benefactors line the grey lias stone wall of the property itself. To one side a generous gravel driveway provides ample parking for several vehicles and access to the stone and block built detached garage, with twin wooden doors, power and light. There is an outside tap to one side, and the gardens extend mainly to the side of the property laid to substantial areas of lawn with mature trees. To one end are some raised beds for vegetable growing, screened by trellis, with a gravel seating area to one corner.

To the other side of the property a former passageway between the neighbouring properties is now a boiler room housing the oil fired boiler for central heating, separate hot water cylinder and oil storage tank.

Agents Note
The property is attached to the neighbouring cottage via the outside store, and the corner of the ground floor bathroom.

Ilton is a convenient village just a few minutes' drive from Ilminster, which offers day to day amenities including a range of independent shops and supermarkets and is also well placed for road links via the A358 to the A303, A30 and M5.
The village itself benefits from facilities including a pre-school and primary school, cricket pitch, excellent village hall and sports area, public house, village hall and riding stables / livery yard. Taunton (9 miles) the County Town, provides a comprehensive range of recreational, scholastic and shopping facilities, as well as a main line railway station (Paddington line). Yeovil and Crewkerne (with its Waitrose supermarket) lie within a similar distance and also have main line railway stations (Waterloo line).
