Property Description

Set within an acre and a half of immaculate private gardens is this substantial five-bedroom house with covered swimming pool. Located near East Grinstead, it was built in 1958 to a design by the renowned architect Michael Twigg (b.1931) and has been extended by the current owners to provide accommodation of almost 4,000 sq ft over two principal floors.

The house is approached by a long hedge-lined driveway to a front courtyard with space for several cars and an insulated triple garage. Entry is through glazed doors to a wide atrium. The hall leads left, past a double-height section of glazing, to two large bedrooms, one currently used as a study and with external access. The property has been updated to provide every bedroom with its own bath or shower room and underfloor heating extends where floors are tiled. Windows are double glazed throughout.

From the ground floor an original hardwood staircase rises a split level to, on the right, a sitting room with curved stone wall and access to a front facing terrace with steps over water to the lawn. On the left is a family room and utility with external access to the rear garden and the swimming pool, which is heated by solar panels.

A new portion of the house can be found on the first floor providing two further bedrooms. At the centre of the plan is the dining room and the kitchen, with Neff appliances, Corian worktops and incredible views across the North Downs.

Ascending a split level at the eastern end, one arrives in the wonderful master bedroom. Vaulted, timber-clad ceilings and a roof-lit internal garden contribute to a Japanese-inspired aesthetic, and glazed doors open to a large terrace overlooking the extensive gardens.

The property was extensively rebuilt between 2006-2008 including replacement of the existing flat roof with a low-pitch roof structure. Two wooden single-storey extensions were replaced by brick structures of similar mass and the entire house was insulated anew. Double glazing has been added throughout, along with gas central heating and all plumbing and electrics have been renewed.

The house was designed by Twigg for his own occupation and built on the grounds of on old Victorian house. Primarily constructed from Smeed Deen London Stock brick, with a steel frame by Dorman Long, the house displays numerous exciting architectural features such as the cantilevered form that houses the expansive dining room. The house was published in a number of books and journals, including Architectural Review, when it was built. Twigg went on to form the architectural practice Michael Twigg Brown, whose most notable work includes the Hay’s Wharf project close to London Bridge.

East Grinstead town centre and railway station can be found less than half a mile away, offering a range of shops and restaurants. There are a number of very good schools in the area including the highly acclaimed Rudolf Steiner School. The surrounding area is well known for its outstanding natural beauty, with Ashdown forest and the South Downs within easy reach.

Train services run directly to London Bridge / Victoria from East Grinstead in less than an hour and there is also a fast 30-minute service from nearby Gatwick Airport into Victoria. International travel is available from Gatwick (15 minutes), Heathrow (45 minutes) and The Euro Tunnel at Ashford (60 minutes).
