Built around 1900,2 The Cottages was part of the accommodation for staff of the estate owned by the local landowner and mine owner. The cook lived in our house.
Around 1976 the properties were sold and the previous owner bought the cottage and extended it from a 2 up 2 down property by doubling the size.
We bought the property in March 1982 as we were looking for somewhere near Carcroft but accessible to Sheffield.
Although we first viewed the property in the winter we instantly fell in love with it. We immediately saw the potential to extend and adapt the cottage and we feel that we have now created an open, spacious and light cottage. Although in the middle of the fields, there is a bus stop at the end of the road, shops 1 mile away and proximity to the A1. The property also enjoys peace and quiet.
We extended twice, first to add a porch and utility room and then a second lounge. We subsequently converted the fourth bedroom to a second bathroom for family reasons and did not lose space because of the 2 fully functional rooms in the roof accessed by a proper stair case.
The internal decor was quite 'fussy' and over time we replaced most of it with subtle colours, using the furniture to bring colour to the rooms. We felt this did not destroy the 'cottage feel'.
The garden is not too big but enough for seating, flowers and growing vegetables. The paved front garden is a sun trap in the winter.
The road networks allow access to Leeds, York and Sheffield within 30-40 minutes as well as good access to schools in Ackworth and Wakefield. Doncaster is an easy 8 miles via a variety of routes.
We are moving closer to our family for retirement and have enjoyed 35 happy years in a lovely property.
The village is situated amongst mixed farmland and woodland on a slight rise roughly six miles north west of Doncaster, or one mile off the A1. The village is one of a handful in the area to have retained much of its original character and has a very peaceful small-scale rural feel. The motorway network is easily accessible with links via the A1/M18/M62 leading to Sheffield, York & Leeds, Adwick Train Station is only 2 miles away leading to Doncaster Train Station which commutes to London within 1hr 30 mins and to Edinburgh Intercity Link. Air travel is also feasible from the Doncaster Sheffield international airport. The popular Doncaster College is also a short distance away.
Taking Hampole balk lane heading away from old Skellow, towars the A1 motorway, turn right onto Crabgate lane, heading towards Burghwallis, follow this road for approximately 800 yards turning left onto Greel lane. The property is situated on the right hand side.
