Situated on Padeswood Road South in Buckley, this lovely home could not be better positioned. Within a brief walk of the town centre and Aldi (other supermarkets are available, if more expensive) yet providing views of open countryside in the other direction it really does have a great deal to offer. The current owner has put in all the hard work so you don’t have to and to be honest, such is her eye for style and taste there is nothing I would alter. From the practicality and beauty of the wood block floors, to the wood burning stove nestling beneath its huge oak lintel this home resembles the ‘after’ shots of a TV ‘Before and After’ make-over show. Only without Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen….
The left hand half of a pair of 1930s semi detached homes, this has had the front garden cleared completely allowing off road parking for at least two vehicles. Some may prefer to retain the garden, but practicality has its place and parking is an underrated attribute. A pathway runs along the side of the home, ending in a wooden gate providing a degree of security to the back garden. The attractive black UPVC front door with its small decorative glass inserts sits within a deep porch typical of homes from this period. This is capped off with a decorative brick arch from the days when bricklayers were so much more than that. They were gnarled men with names like Sydney who wore flat caps and rolled their own but they were craftsmen, and it showed. But I digress.
Opening the front door reveals the beauty of the flooring which, with the exception of the kitchen runs throughout the ground floor. These were apparently the original floors, installed when the home was built and lovingly brought back to life after years languishing beneath swathes of Axminster. CarpetWorld have a lot to answer for…. The theme of wood is continued by the internal doors, all of which are the original items, having been laboriously sanded back to the bare wood. This is a very attractive feature and perfectly in keeping with the rest of the home.
To the right lies the lounge. This is a haven of peace where you notice something else about homes from this era; the silence. They are solidly built to the extent that any overhearing from next door is all but eliminated, unless your neighbours are amateur trumpeters of course. This lovely room is kept bright and airy by the large bay window, and cosy by the open coal fire in its striking hearth and surround. Needless to say, a modern heating system renders this virtually redundant for all practical purposes but it remains a thing of beauty.
Towards the rear of the home we find the sitting room, where a log burning stove sits beneath its enormous oak lintel and provides warmth to not only this cosy room, but also the dining room sitting through an archway and overlooking the delightful rear garden. This dining room is kept very light not only by the French doors opening into the garden but by the series of ceiling mounted spotlights and make a very civilised place in which to dine. Stepping through the French doors onto the small decked patio provides for the possibility of al fresco eating or maybe simply relaxing with a drink at the end of a long day. A well kept lawn stretches down to where a small brick building lies at the bottom of the garden. Currently used for storage, an enterprising future owner may think that a hot tub may be a good idea; just a thought.
A door to the side of the dining room takes us into the kitchen. Quite a narrow room, though not so narrow as to be called ‘galley style’, or ‘cramped’ as more honest estate agents say, any shortcomings in size are more than compensated for by the sheer quality of the fittings and the way it has been laid out. With the exception of a dishwasher everything you need is here, up to and including a vast American style fridge/freezer, so cramped it is not and its proximity to the adjacent dining room makes serving guests simplicity itself.
Moving upstairs brings onto the broad landing and from where, to the rear of the home we find the bathroom. This, as you would expect has been fitted out to the same exacting standards as the rest of the house and provides a suite of a pedestal hand basin, lavatory and bath fitted with a glass shower screen and electric shower above. Heating is catered for by the towel rail/radiator, this being part of the home’s gas powered central heating system.
Adjacent to here is the rear bedroom, a large room made all the larger by the one complete wall having been given over to a huge fitted wardrobe, almost negating the need for free standing furniture apart from the double bed. A door in one corner of the room reveals the airing cupboard, also housing the hot water tank. A large picture window gives a pleasant view across the garden and on to the nearby hills.
Moving to the front we find the bête noir of the three bedroom semi, the smallest of the bedrooms. Although it must be said that here, the problem is nothing like as severe as in most modern homes because the house is large enough to prevent the need for the stairwell to intrude into this space. Thus we are left with a comfortable single bedroom, with easily enough space for furniture. However as it is currently in use as a dressing room, a role it performs perfectly this is even less of an issue.
Finally we come to the front facing master bedroom. This is slightly larger than its twin and it capitalises on this via the compete wall of fitted wardrobes offering sufficient clothes storage to rival Primark, with the whole room being kept delightfully bright courtesy of the large bay window which mirrors that found in the lounge beneath. The wardrobes also allow enough free floor space to accommodate large bedside tables either side of the double bed, and further items in the bay of the window.
