St. Winifred’s Well Cottage is a grade II listed property, believed to have been built c. 1804. St Winifred was a 7th Century Welsh martyr who was associated with attributing healing powers to springs and wells. St. Winifred's Well is reputed to be within the grounds of nearby Bath College and the cottage is thought to be named after the well. A carved stone relief on the front of the house beautifully depicts St. Winifred.
Winifred's Lane is located on the upper slopes of Lansdown, one of the most sought after areas in the unesco world heritage city of Bath. Located just above Sion Hill and Somerset Place, in an attractive leafy area of Bath with beautiful homes and attractive countryside close by. The cultural and retail attractions of Bath city centre are within a half a mile, including The Royal Crescent and local amenities on St. Jame's Square. This location is favoured for the excellent local schools that include independent co-education Kingswood School and the independent Royal High School for girls. Access to the M4 is convenient from here with a journey of around 8 miles to Junction 18. Bristol Airport is around 20 miles. Trains from Bath Spa have a journey time of around 90 minutes to London Paddington.
The cottage is approached via a gated entrance off Somerset Lane, through a beautiful enclosed cottage garden. This charming house sits beautifully in its surroundings and the impressive ashlar stone front elevation features sash windows, a pitched pantile roof and charming shell shaped porch hood. Inside the accommodation is over three floors with elegant period features throughout, including parquet and original wood flooring, cornicing and fireplaces. The southerly aspect of the house ensures lots of light floods through the sash windows to the front. On the ground floor is a well fitted kitchen with solid wood units and worktops, space for a range cooker and pantry. Across the hallway is a dining room/reception room with original parquet flooring and feature fireplace. On the first floor there is an elegant sitting room and an office/bedroom three with an en-suite WC, both rooms have far reaching southerly views. On the top floor are two further charming bedrooms with original wood flooring, and a well fitted shower room. All these rooms again have beautiful views across the city to the hills beyond. There is an attractive conservatory accessed from the garden, and this has *planning permission to replace the existing conservatory and outbuildings with a utility room and structural glass conservatory adjacent to the kitchen.
The private garden is a particular feature of this property and is an absolute delight. It has a southerly aspect and is a real sun trap and feels very private. Stocked well with a variety of plants and shrubs, flower beds and a pond; it also has patio areas and a lawn area. There are two stone storage sheds with power on one side and gated side access on the other.
