There are plenty of recurring activities, films and events that take place in the village, from Bridge, Bowls to Zumba.

Enter this narrow road and immediately turn left, and Summer Cottage is at the bottom.
The history of summer cottage
Summer Cottage borders Mill Lane. Now a tranquil and picturesque area, it was once a hive of activity in the production of linen.
Mere has grown up in the south-western corner of Wiltshire, bordering Dorset and Somerset. Geologically it is on the dividing line between the chalk to the north, along which there are numerous springs, and Kimmeridge clay to the south, on which Summer Cottage is situated.
The Ashfield Water and Shreen Water carry away some of the outflow from the springline and in the late 17th Century flax became an important crop locally. It enabled cloth making to become well established as a cottage industry with spinning and weaving taking place in peoples’ homes.
In the 18th century, Mere became the centre of the local linen industry, which also involved the weaving of dowlas, a course form of bed linen. Some spinning of wool and cloth weaving continued alongside the new industry of silk.
Summer Cottage is situated on Edgebridge, where the first gas works were sited, and the town was lit by gaslight in 1839. Dye House, opposite Summer Cottage, became the local bakery. In 1906 the former Water Street Silk Factory was reopened by the Royal Wilton Carpet Factory, who continued to use it until the Second World War.
A ridgeway on top of Mere Down provided an early-east west route that would have been used in historic times. Stone mile markers are still visible, erected in 1752, that display miles to Sarum (Salisbury) and London. When the London to Exeter roads were reasonably good, Mere was on the main route and had a daily coach and wagon through the village.
In 1976, Mere was bypassed by the A303, now allowing this pleasant small country town to be relatively traffic-free.
