Hidden away up Quarry Lane in Sychdyn, a road so small as to be easily missed and that is a principal part of its appeal, lies this enchanting home. Originally two small cottages converted to one, it sits at the bottom of a series of small stone steps accessed from its own off road parking area and adjacent to the detached garage. To the front of the home it is separated from the road by a rockery style garden with an ornamental pond and various beds containing plants for colour.
Level with the road and adjacent to the parking area stands the detached garage.
Opening the up and over door reveals that it is, in fact only half a standard garage deep. This is because the rear section has been walled off to provide space for an office. Access to this rear section is gained via a large French door in the side of the building and allows us into a fully insulated and cosy room, which makes a very pleasant and versatile working environment.
A sloping lawn is beside the office, running down to a wooden storage shed before continuing towards the gable end of the house. It terminates in a small patio area adjoining the stone steps before they continue down to the ‘front’ door. Yes, I know it sounds confusing but when you see it, everything becomes clear(ish).
A semi-glazed wooden front door allows access straight into the charming stone flag floored kitchen where, to our left the space opens out housing a sideboard, before we turn back on ourselves to find a large recess containing an automatic washer drier and linen storage.
To the right and up a small step as we enter is the kitchen and here, the home reveals its true self as a real fairy tale cottage. In fact I had to check the walls to see if they were actually made of gingerbread…. It is a long galley style kitchen but suffers from none of the cramped space that afflicts so many of its type. A real wood section makes up the work surfaces either side of the genuine Belfast sink, while opposite here sits a highly impressive double width range style gas cooker which would make light work of feeding that family gatherings that such a home is sure to encourage. The fitted units are all of solid wood, accentuating the cottage feel and making the general ambience seem warm and inviting.
The stone floor continues through into the dining room which provides ample space for a full six seat dining table and is lit by a side window, through with the thickness of the cottage walls becomes apparent. In my introduction I mentioned that this was a particularly quirky home and now you begin to see why.
We move into the front facing sitting room up three steps and through an archway where we find a very cosy (and no, that is not a euphemism for ‘tiny’) room, made all the more so by the massive raw stone chimney breast housing its gas fired ‘log burner’. As a heat source this offers the best of all worlds with all the charm of a flickering fire on a chilly evening, while having that warmth and comfort available on demand and with no effort.
Returning to the dining room we find another flight of steps taking us up and through into the second of the original cottages that make up this home. From a small square landing, we can either go down more steps into what has been used as a hobby room/teenager’s hang out where a brick hearth and chimney breast house a real log burner. This is currently not in use having been found to be faulty but could easily be reinstated. A door to the rear of this room opens into a narrow passageway to what was the front door to this second cottage and from where, there leads a footpath past the front garden and up to the road. The other end of the passage reveals a door to the downstairs cloakroom.
Returning to the small landing by the dining room (are you following this?) and moving to the front of the home, we find the second sitting room. Similar in size but different in character this offers a genuine log burner, suitable for those more prepared to put in a bit of effort in order to enjoy a cosy night in. The choice of these two rooms contribute enormously towards this cottage’s credentials as a family home, offering somewhere for everyone to do their own thing in their own way.
Opposite here is the staircase, leading up to a half landing off which lies the bathroom. This has a solid wood floor which, always being warm on the feet is a welcome feature, There is a hand basin mounted atop a set of storage units, a lavatory and bath with a mains powered shower. If I am brutally honest, this could perhaps benefit from something of an update but, as this is something many new owners choose to do as a matter of course it is of little importance.
Climbing once more onto the upper landing, through the door directly opposite is the first of the double bedrooms. This is a charming room (I know that is an adjective I have used before but nothing else adequately covers this home) with a ceiling that slopes down with the shape of the roof but not enough to encroach onto the available space. Exposed beams complete the Beatrix Potter feel to the room.
Next to here is a larger bedroom, mirroring the ceiling beams and maximising the floor space with a cunning set of fitted wardrobes. These, although very pleasant are not actually necessary as there is adequate space for free standing furniture should you choose. A point of genuine interest in this room is the Hobbit sized door in the rear wall. Opening this and crouching low, you find yourself in what is either the world’s biggest wardrobe, most inconvenient bedroom or the hobby room where you are least likely to be disturbed. Whatever use you select for it, lit by its large velux roof window it remains a pleasing curiosity and a definite talking point should dinner party conversation ever flag.
Finally, at the end of the landing is the third bedroom. This has a very attractive pine floor which echoes the changing levels of the lower floor. From a raised section as we enter, we step down into the body of the room where the bed, desk and wardrobes reside. Currently configured as a large single room it could be altered to take a double bed but in all honesty it is better suited to its present form, where it remains a very comfortable place to seek refuge from the stresses of the world: As a bedroom should be.

All in all this home is a bit of a one off. If you like straight walls, magnolia paint and living somewhere that resembles where everyone else lives; it’s not for you. But if you crave originality, somewhere with a history and a back story, where nothing would surprise you, somewhere almost removed from reality and a place to make dreams, then come and view it but be warned.....After this, many other homes will simply bore you.
