For those who may be interested in the history of the property.....During the Battle of Culloden an officer’s horse threw a shoe and Mr Barty shod it. The officer was impressed and asked if there was anything he could do in return. Barty said he should like to be blacksmith at Meikleour. This was duly granted and in 1746 four stakes were driven into the ground to mark the site where the Old Smithy stands today. The Barty family occupied the property from 1746 until 1947. There is also an ordnance survey point on the side of the cottage.
