Property Description

Description Thatched Cottages is a row of houses at the southern edge of the village formerly four dwellings now comprising of three. All have quite spectacular views but Barkham being on the end enjoys the most panoramic of all. The cottages date from the 1700’s, are grade II listed and of stone build beneath a thatched roof, picturesque in both appearance and setting. In 1738 seventeen hundred acres in the manor were enclosed by an act of parliament and one of the place names was referred to as ‘Barkham Hill’.

Barkham has been occupied by the present owner for some 60 years, it was two cottages until said owner managed to purchase the adjoining cottage from The Crown and from there proceeded to convert the building into one property although the layout has not significantly altered with both original staircases intact and still in use and there as one would imagine is a great deal of character to be found inside with exposed beams and timbers. At the entrance is a thatched canopy porch and old wooden door into a hall. The interior is in perfectly good condition but offers immense scope for updating cosmetically. The ground floor contains two well proportioned reception rooms, each with working fireplaces and staircases and both also having very decent head height clearance for a six foot plus inhabitant. There is a kitchen with fitted units and a bathroom. The first floor has two big double bedrooms, a generous single and a bathroom and wc. The two doubles have an interconnecting door but being served by two staircases this is not required in order to access any of the other bedrooms. Off the kitchen is a utility room and adjacent a covered area of workshop/storage space in three sections all equipped with power and lighting and incorporating a boiler room and coal hole. The area opens at the end into the garage.

Outside At the front is a long lawned garden flanking a gravel driveway which leads to the garage, at the top of the driveway is a parking bay. Near the road is one of the villages hand water pumps then halfway down a rockery and ornamental ponds. The rear garden is mostly lawn with some mature trees and a few raised stone and sleeper flower beds. In the corner is a pond. On the left is a 17’9 x 8’ timber shed with power and light and joining it to the cottage a lean to.

Agents note: The property was rewired approx. 2 years ago. The ridge of the roof was renewed 3 years ago and the bulk of the roof rethatched approx. 12 years ago.
