“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together”. Not a quote about houses, but as it happens Van Gogh’s words could easily be applied to this beautiful house on the very edge of Lloyd Park. There’s an attention to detail everywhere you look, and it’s those little things, when added together, that make this a great house. Van Gogh also said “there is no blue without yellow”, and the owners bold use of primary colours throughout the house have created a warm, vibrant family home. On the ground floor there is a real feeling of space, with the dual aspect through lounge flooded with light, thus enhancing the rich tones of the beautiful stripped floorboards. From there, the modern fitted kitchen is directly behind, offering access to (and views of) the garden to the rear. Any family home needs space, particularly bedroom space, and that is amply supplied here, with over 70 square metres on the upper two floors. The five bedrooms (of which four are doubles) are as beautifully presented as the ground floor, and with that clever use of colour that you will have seen earlier. The family bathroom on the first floor is exquisite, with a fabulous free standing roll top bath, whilst the shower room on the second floor is amongst the best we have ever seen in a loft conversion. Add to all of that the aforementioned private rear garden (we can see ourselves sitting on that patio area with a cold drink in hand), and what you have is an exceptional family home, immaculately presented, brilliantly thought through, and utterly, utterly charming. As you can tell, we love it – it truly is a great thing…
In 1898 the family of Edward Lloyd gave the urban district council Winns or the Water House, once the home of William Morris, with 9½ a. Of grounds, on condition that the council bought the adjoining 9¾ a. Lloyd Park was opened in 1900. About 16 a. Of the adjoining Avelins estate were bought in 1912 as an addition to the park, and laid out in 1921. It’s easy to see then where the name of this street originates from. But enough history how about the present? Well, Lloyd Park is a fantastic place to have on your doorstep, with tennis courts, bowling greens, an award winning art gallery, and plenty of green open space for the kids (or canine members of the family) to burn off excess energy. If you’re in need of refreshment after all that, head to The Dog & Duck for a fantastic pizzas, or up to The Bell for equally delicious fare. Hoe Street is just the other side of Forest Road, where there are more places to eat and drink than you can shake a stick at, whilst the cinema at The Scene is great for checking out the latest blockbusters. Full of history, yet full of life too – what a fantastic part of East London to live in...
William Morris was a Walthamstow lad - he lived in the Water House on Forest Road. His childhood home is now the William Morris Gallery, the only gallery on the face of the planet dedicated to his life and work. Lloyd Park, in which the gallery stands, is named after another former resident of the Water House, Edward Lloyd, a publisher of penny dreadfuls. As well as having a medieval moat, playground and a cafe, the park is also home to some great local events, including the May Day dog show which shouldn't be missed. The best dressed dog round is amazing. One year it had a Star Wars theme, with staffie princess Leahs competing against at-at Great Danes - it was glorious. The park is surrounded by quiet streets of ex-Warner properties, the Bell pub is around the corner from the gallery, and the cafes of Hoe Street are just a short trot away. Give Wyndwood Art District a go - this little cafe has a lot going on, including a running club and exhibitions. Tommy’s Tuck In cafe, opposite the park, is a good spot for a hangover fixing breakfast. All this is only a fifteen minute walk from the station.
