Property Description

This characterful two-bedroom house on Belmont Road in much-loved Faversham in Kent has been lovingly restored by the current owner to create a calm and minimal family space, using natural materials and white tones throughout. The house is larger than most on the pretty streets that encircle the town, with a cellar and lovely attic room that are currently used as a music and playroom respectively.

Belmont Road is only a five-minute walk to the centre of Faversham and its train station, which runs direct services to London Victoria, and St. Pancras International in approximately 70 minutes.

This house retains its smart Victorian proportions, and has been inventively re-organised inside to allow a utility room and flexible living spaces. Entry is to a hallway which leads to the sunny kitchen and dining room, separated from the living room by a white-painted staircase.

The kitchen is fitted with bamboo worktops and ply cabinetry that mimic the warm tone of the stripped oak floorboards underfoot. Beyond this is a soft pink open-plan bathroom and tiled utility room, that opens onto the south-facing garden.

At the front of the house is the cosy living space, flooded with light from the bay window and centred around a woodburner. A soft palette of stripped wood, white walls and deep grey features runs throughout the house.

Upstairs are two bedrooms that lead from the hallway through pocket sliding doors. The master bedroom looks over the garden, and connects to a large bathroom and dressing room.

The second floor attic room which could be used as a third bedroom or office space currently houses a train set, left by the last family who lived in the house for 52 years, and gifted to the current owner’s son. Similarly the cellar, which has a light well and has been fully tanked, could be integrated into the rest of the house to continue the building’s refurbishment.

Faversham is one of the South East’s most distinguished market towns. It boasts nearly 500 listed buildings (including what The Guardian has described as “the best-preserved medieval street in the country” in Abbey Street) and has a rich history dating back to mediaeval times. The market that still runs today has been held in the town for over 900 years. It is also well known as a centre for brewing with Shepherd Neame, established in the 17th century, still operating on a significant scale from Faversham.

The small town benefits from having the beautiful Kent Downs on the doorstep and the coast not too far away. Seasalter (home of the famous Sportsman pub) and Whitstable can be reached on foot via the Crab & Winkle Way in an afternoon or morning’s walk.

The independent Royal cinema is popular and there are lots of new cafés born out of the food and arts revival that is sweeping the Kent Coast. There are many good schools nearby, including Ethelbert Road Primary School whose catchment area this house is in.
