Enviable village location
Space to raise a family, the convenience of close proximity to shops, facilities and transport, the community feel of a village, plus the potential to extend and add value – The Haven has it all.
The same family have lived here for a number of years and their three daughters have grown up in this lively, happy family home. It’s now time for the current owners to move on and for The Haven’s next chapter to begin.
Tucked away down a quiet lane in the heart of Harwell Village, This large, semi detached property has been thoughtfully extended over the years and now offers approximately 1974 sq ft of living space arranged over three floors. The home offers masses of potential to extend and/or reconfigure some of the internal spaces to create a modern, spacious country cottage.
There are 5 bedrooms, 3 receptions, study, a large country style kitchen/diner with aga, utility room and pretty cottage gardens to the front and rear, making it a pleasure to sit outside at any time of the day.
To the side of the house there is off-street parking for two cars, and you enter through the pretty garden gate and walk up the gravel driveway to a covered porch which opens into the first of three reception rooms. This is currently used as a family room/TV room but could make a stunning entrance hall with a welcoming crackling open fire and views out onto the front garden.
Turn right and you enter the second reception – currently known as the ‘posh sitting room’ – a lovely double aspect light and open space perfect for entertaining and family gatherings with French doors which open out onto the rear garden in the summer and a warming open fire in the winter. Turn left and you’ll find an exceptionally large dining room with another set of French doors opening onto the garden, making this the perfect space to entertain either in summer or winter (you could easily have twenty in this room for Christmas dinner!).
The spacious kitchen is decorated in a country cottage style with a gorgeous green aga that is the focal point of the room. There are spacious granite worktops and plenty of storage and shelving space. There’s an integrated dishwasher and enough space for a large American-style fridge/freezer. The family can gather around the large farmhouse kitchen table for informal suppers or homework, and you can deal with laundry, muddy boots or dogs in the adjoining utility room with direct access from the back door. There’s also a useful downstairs WC just off the utility room.
Upstairs on the first floor you’ll find a spacious and light-filled master bedroom with double aspect windows giving views to the front and rear, generous built-in wardrobes and an en-suite shower room. There are two further single bedrooms side by side which would make excellent children’s rooms or could be combined to make one large bedroom.
The family bathroom has a bathtub, sink and WC. The fourth bedroom on this floor is currently used as a study and has a small en-suite shower room. This could be combined with the adjacent current main bathroom to create a larger family bathroom with space for a bath and separate shower unit.
The loft space on the second floor has been extended to create two further bedrooms – one double and one single. We think this space could make a fantastic master bedroom suite with double bedroom, separate dressing area and en-suite, or alternatively a great room for granny, nanny or a teenager wanting their own space and privacy.
Outside and Gardens
The Haven has pretty and spacious gardens to the front and rear, and makes the most of the sunlight at all times of day. You can enjoy a morning coffee in the tranquil front garden, and dinner alfresco on the patio to the rear. There are lawns, plants and mature plants and trees giving a lovely sense of privacy. There is very little through traffic on Kings Lane, meaning the gardens are always peaceful, despite being in the heart of the village. There is off street parking for two cars to the side of the house.
Location
Despite its proximity to the larger town of Didcot with its excellent transport links, shops, schools and leisure facilities, Harwell retains a distinctive village feel, with a thriving local community and lots of village activities and social functions throughout the year. The Harwell Feast is an extremely popular event that takes place every May and sees the local community and hundreds of visitors come together to celebrate village life with a parade, bbq, food and drink stalls and arts and crafts.
There is a pre-school and primary school in the village and lots of activities for kids including toddler groups, a young voices choir, Brownies, Guides, Cubs and Scouts, many of which take place in the newly refurbished village hall. There’s a fantastic local butcher and newsagent just at the end of the road, or for a greater range of shops, Didcot is just two miles away where you can find an M&S Food Hall, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and a range of shops, restaurants, theatre and cinema at The Orchard Centre.
Trains to London Paddington from Didcot Parkway take under 40 minutes, and to Oxford City Centre in approximately 20 minutes. There are also regular bus services from the village to Oxford where you can explore the fantastic new Westgate Centre, Abingdon and surrounding villages.
Local schools in the area are excellent. Didcot Girls’ School is rated ‘Outstanding’ by ofsted and there is a huge choice of independent schools nearby including The Manor, The School of St Helen and St Katharine, Radley, Abingdon, Our Lady’s, Cothill and Chandlings.
