Property Description

Its Sunday morning and you can hear the mellow peals of a nearby ancient church, some while later you draw back the bedroom curtains to reveal an attractive view toward the South Downs, and in the foreground are well-tended communal grounds. It is difficult to completely describe the village atmosphere that "Old Willingdon" retains as technically speaking it is now part of the conurbation of Eastbourne. However, the subject home lies in the heart of a historic, and architecturally pleasing, neighbourhood slumbering at the foot of the South Downs. The subject home, albeit an apartment, resembles a cottage from the outside with the private entrance door approached via a leafy courtyard . Having gained the accommodation, we think that viewers will be surprised at the scope and, some might say chic, contemporary presentation of the interior. Broadly speaking the property lies on a South-North axis and enjoys a triple aspect, with the living room overlooking quaint Church Street, whereas the main bedroom enjoys a Southerly aspect over the communal grounds. The part-vaulted ceilings, in most areas, are a reminder of the buildings past and this plus other traditional features a sharp, but pleasing, contrast to the contemporary nature of the interior. As mentioned earlier "Old Willingdon" still retains a village ambience with it's church, post office, two pubs and the excellent "Thai Village" restaurant close by. As well as the use of the communal grounds we can also relate that the property boasts a single garage accessed via Hoo Gardens. For the more energetic we can also advise that a short walk will bring you to the South Downs and access to the "South Downs Way" or a more relaxed ramble to the neighbouring village of Jevington. Viewing of this chain free home is advised.

History And Location

The Hoo is thought to have origins as a Georgian era manor house and subsequently was acquired by local landowners, the Wedderburn family in the late 19th Century. It was during this period of ownership that award-winning architect Sir Edwin Lutyens extended and remodelled the house and associated buildings. With the assistance of landscape designer, Gertrude Jekyll, the grounds were transformed to include two substantive gazebos, pieced arch boundary wall and circular lily pool on the lower terrace. Following sale by he Wedderburn's the property was, for awhile, a ladies college. In 1955 the house and associated land was sold to a development company who sub-divided it into flats. The following year the grounds were slightly reduced in size when the former tennis courts became a row of house. The entire property became Grade II listed in April 1967. Situated in the heart of "Old Willingdon" The Hoo lies in the designated conservation area that encompasses this end of Church Street and parts of Wish Hill.
