An inspiring, beautiful living space in a central but yet tucked away location, between Richmond and St Andrews Road. Built circa 1900 during the railway expansion, the three adjacent buildings were coach houses for the original Montpelier Hotel. The property was converted towards the end of the 21st century by an artist and an architect creating the unique living and studio space it is today. Gates enclose the front courtyard which open allowing both pedestrian and vehicle access if required. The front of the property can be accessed via large double doors or via a smaller door set within. Stepping inside reveals an open plan space with a double height ceiling punctuated by a huge roof lantern bathing the room with natural light. The durable concrete floor adds a modernist touch while suiting a variety of uses. The current owners used the space as an art gallery and workshop with many other possibilities. Two rooms flank the central atrium which combine to make a impressive space for live or work.
A door on the left hand side of the room opens into a hallway with utility with w/c and a staircase rising to the first floor. The first floor room is currently set up as an open plan living/ kitchen space with a range of built in kitchen units, painted floor boards, sky light windows, column radiators, a cast iron log burner and sky light windows. There is a striking vaulted ceiling giving the space distinctive loft style appeal while windows at the end of the room frame a roof top view of the city. A walkway bridges the two upper floors and has a stripped wood floor and light from the central roof lantern. Internal windows over look the central atrium giving a connection between the upper and lower floor. The right hand wing of the upper floor has a living space which continues the theme with a painted wood floor and sky light windows. This flexible space could be used as another bedroom, living space or office.
A doorway leads through from the back of the room into the only formal bedroom of the property which also has a arched ceiling, painted wood floor boards and a window with city views. While in the current set up this is the solitary bedroom, there would be opportunity to create more bedrooms or alter the overall layout if required. A second staircase on this side of the building drops down to a useful utility and storage area and a doorway to a contemporary Japanese style bathroom with deep roll top tub, walk-in shower, underfloor heating and an oversized wash hand basin. Externally the property has an enclosed courtyard at the front of the property with patio seating area, shed and planted beds.
This is an exceptional home within a mile of the city centre close to the buzz and vibrancy of Stokes Croft and Picton Street. The internal space offers many exciting possibilities and could be used to suit a range of uses. Offered with no onward chain.
Vendor's comments - "It has be a privilege spending a portion of our life in such a special building. It has been very hard moving out and in to an 'ordinary' house. We will sorely miss the daily pleasure of living in such an interesting and inviting architectural space.
We have loved the light, it's always bright. We have loved the views. We have loved the feeling of being up in a treehouse-like living space - it feels very safe and tucked away up there (you can peer out the window to see who is knocking on the gate). My favourite room is the little room that bridges the left and right hand side of the building and is suspended about the studio space. It's such a calm, peaceful and bright room. We have loved the curved ceilings. You can hear owls from the bedroom -as it is sandwiched between Richmond Road and St Andrews Road you don't hear any traffic noise. We have had some amazing parties and gathering in the studio space downstairs - you can really work that space! And apart from parties, we initially used that space as a gallery. We have then used it as our studio - what a studio! That space has so much potential.
In addition, it feels like the perfect spot in Bristol (if you love Montpelier, which we do) we love our neighbours, our local (the Cadbury is minutes away), Picton street just at the bottom of the road (with lovely local food shops and places to eat). And most useful - the train station is a one minute walk away.
I have never lived in such an amazing place and suspect I never will again. Whenever anyone steps through the door for the first time they never fail to gasp at what is revealed inside! I do hope that whoever moves in feels as passionately about it as we have done."
