The West Cliff Avenue

The West Cliff is the seaside resort area of Whitby. It houses, amongst many things, many charming guest houses, The Metropole and The Royal Hotel, a leisure centre, The Spa Pavilion theatre, the Captain Cook Monument and the world famous whale bone arch. This area of the town was developed in the Victorian era as the fishing and shipbuilding industries began to slide into decline. The ever recognisable Royal Crescent can be found along the cliff top where a short walk, or ride on the Cliff lift, will take you to a glorious stretch of beach sweeping along to the coastal village of Sandsend. During the Whitby Regatta the West Cliff becomes a hive of activity and at any time during the summer months bumper boats, a go-kart track and outdoor paddling pool can be enjoyed. As well as being a hot spot for tourists many locals also choose to live in this area due to its wonderful atmosphere and close proximity to both the beach and the centre of the town.
