The Gaumont cinema opened in 1914 with a capacity of 866. It was closed during the Blitz, and re-opened 23rd February 1941. It closed in October 1956, and was sold by the Rank Organisation in June 1960 and it became a meat packers, later a delicatessen and then an importers and wholesalers and artists studio. Following close consultation with the local community, and planners, Waugh Thistleton architects, helped deliver a scheme that combines the reconstruction of the original 1914 Gaumont façade with the construction of a contemporary black-brick, green-roofed building.
