Some History
Dallington, which is now included in the Borough of Northampton, was held in the 17th century by the family of Raynsford, one of whom, Sir Richard, became Lord Chief Justice in 1676. He died three years later, and in the church there is a fine memorial to his memory. Bridges says of the House "here is a good Manor-house, formerly inhabited by the Lord Chief Justice Raynsford." Descendants of his sold the estate in 1720 to Sir Joseph Jekyll, Master of the Rolls, and he it was who built the existing house, on the site of the old one. He died in 1738. Eventually the estate was acquired by Earl Spencer, and the Hall was for some years in the occupation of the Rt. Hon. Charles Robert Spencer, who will be remembered by many as the representative of North Northamptonshire in Parliament during the 1880's, and subsequently of the Mid division. After his accession to the title as 6th Earl, he gave Dallington Hall in 1919 to the Northampton General Hospital as a convalescent home. The current conversion to apartments was done in the 1970's.
