Two bedroom ground floor flat, for over 55s managed by Clwyd Alyn Housing Association available on a shared ownership of 70 / 30 split, price shown reflects 70%
In recent years Holywell town centre has undergone something of a metamorphosis, which some may consider perhaps overdue in this attractive little town. As a location it has much to commend it, being easily accessible from Mold, Flint, Deeside and with even Chester in easy reach it is a commuters paradise. Having escaped the confines of work, the playgrounds of the North Wales coast beckon from the other direction, offering a well balanced combination of facilities, adding to the appeal of this delightful home.
Situated just off Pen y Ball Street near the rear of the Home Bargains supermarket, Cae Mefus is a small cul-de-sac of terraced properties managed by Clwyd Alyn Housing Association and catering exclusively for the over 55s, so raucous neighbours should never be an issue! To the rear of the home is a large parking area, providing dedicated spots to each of the apartments, removing at a stroke one of the perceived disadvantages of town centre living. A small access yard lies off the car park, separated by an iron railing and where we find a door into an external store, useful for hiding away the wheelie bins in fact, you could almost say it was wheelie useful….
Adjacent to here is the “front” door which allows us into the inner hallway. Immediately to the right is another door into the first of the bedrooms. If I am honest, this is not a large room but its available space is maximised by the addition of a large fitted wardrobe. This removes the need for free standing furniture, while its sliding mirror doors help to give the impression of a far bigger space and bearing in mind the likely uses to which the room will be put, it makes an excellent occasional guest room or dressing room.
Alongside here, past a large walk-in store cupboard we find the bathroom or to be more precise, the shower room. This has been configured as a wet room with the needs of the more elderly in mind, and it meets those needs splendidly. There are numerous grab rails thoughtfully positioned and giving confidence to those for whom balance may occasionally present a challenge, while the electric shower unit is set at such a level as to be easily controlled by someone using the fold-down seat. Needless to say, the rest of the suite comprises a pedestal hand basin and low level flush lavatory.
Next door is the principal bedroom. This is far larger than its cousin and made to feel larger still by another set of fitted wardrobes equipped with mirror fronted doors. Removing any real need for free standing furniture this leaves a spacious and light room, offering a peaceful spot in which to curl up and allow the stresses of the day to fade away.
The remaining door off the hallway reveals the lounge, which comes as something of a surprise but in a good way. At 16’ by over 13’ this is the sort of room you rarely find in an apartment and, with its twin aspect windows ensuring a great level of light at all times it often feels even bigger. There is a walk-in store cupboard in one corner, providing somewhere for all the ‘stuff’ that everyone has but few know where to put, as there is a limit to what you can slide under the bed and I draw the line at ironing boards…
Another door from here leads into the kitchen which to be brutal, could benefit from a little freshening up. Everything is present and correct but the units are a bit tired, although if refurbishment is not in your budget they are perfectly serviceable and would remain so for a good while yet. In the corner of the room, beneath one of the work tops is the gas fired central heating boiler with the plumbing for an automatic washing machine beside it, while a break in the units nearby leaves space for a free standing gas cooker. In short, there is everything you need and nothing you don’t which is as it should be.

All in all this is an ideal opportunity for someone looking for a pleasant retirement on limited resources. Taking advantage of the shared ownership scheme could find you with a home of your own for less than £50k which in this day and age is almost unheard of. That it is also a home you could easily choose even were money not a consideration is purely a bonus. It provides deceptively roomy accommodation in the most convenient of locations and gives someone down-sizing a home that would not necessitate losing so many of those treasures amassed over the years. As we get older, we seek an easier life and the presence of the High street within yards and a supermarket even closer helps enormously towards this end. So if it is peace you are looking for but do not want to move too far out from the bustle of day to day life, this could be for you.
