Sir John Brograve was an English lawyer who served as an mp from 1586 to 1593 as well as Principle Justice of the Peace for the county of Hertfordshire. His home sat astride the two parishes he owned - Westmill and Braughing, on the site where Hamels stands today. It is worth nothing that some of Brograve's distinctive structure and aesthetics are evident in the mansion even to this day.
