History
The crowning achievement of architect John Pinch, Sydney Place was built between 1807 and 1808. Pinch’s other works include Cavendish Crescent and Sion Hill Place in Lansdown. Pinch was the retained architect of the Darlington Estate, off Bathwick Hill and designed the terrace, taking the Bath stone exclusively from one quarry and raising it tier by tier to form one compact building. Shortly after their completion, both ends of this fabulous terrace were acquired by the royal family of the time; Queen Charlotte, the Queen Mother and wife of George III one end and her son, the high living and gregarious Duke of Clarence at the other end.
