Property Description

Cheriton House is a magnificent Georgian fronted property suggested to have been built by the firm of the renowned Nathaniel Ireson in the late 18th Century. The property has been added to and altered over the years, now leaving us with an extensive family home with spacious living accommodation, a great variety of fascinating outbuildings and beautiful grounds including a stunning secluded walled garden.

Cheriton House is set in a stunning part of Somerset, close to the Wiltshire and Dorset borders. The village has a pub and nearby Charlton Horethorne has a village shop and a well-known gastro pub. The northern fringe of the Blackmore Vale has changed little in centuries and comprises mainly dairy grassland divided by thick blackthorn hedges interspersed with small woodland coverts, remaining much as it did when Thomas Hardy immortalised it in his Wessex novels. Pretty villages break up the lovely landscape, comprising mainly period houses and cottages at their hearts, and throughout the area strict planning controls are in place to ensure that the nature and character of the area is not spoilt.

However, the communication links are superb with the Wincanton junction of the A303 (predominately dual carriage way all the way to the M3 and London and leads to Exeter in the West) only two miles away and Templecombe station with its Waterloo connection only three miles away. Castle Cary has a connection to London Paddington taking only 95 minutes. The major towns in the area are all within easy reach such as Wincanton with its large supermarkets and a number of smaller shops, and the market town of Sherborne, renowned for its two castles and spectacular Abbey. The nearest shops are Wincanton or alternatively Sherborne or Gillingham both of which have a Waitrose.

Of particular note are the excellent schools with Hazelgrove Preparatory School at Sparkford (one junction further along the A303), Port Regis and St Mary’s at Shaftsbury, the Sherborne Boys and Girls schools, and Leweston just south of Sherborne. Bruton School for Girls, Kings Bruton and Milton Abbey are also within daily striking distance. The local primary school in Horsington is also well regarded.
