History of the Property
Being built in the 14th Century, Old Friars is believed to be not only one of the oldest houses in Guilford but the whole of the UK. Positioned just one mile south of Guildford, standing at the foot of St. Catherine's monument, a 13th Century Chapel, built a few years prior to Old Friars which was built to accommodate the Pilgrims en route to their pilgrimage to Canterbury.
In 1808 Old Friars even caught the eye of none other than William Turner when on his way back to London, he stopped close by Old Friars and sketched a view of St. Catherine's monument, Old Friars can be seen on the right of the Sketch. This sketch along with other Turners artwork is on display to the general public at the Tate Modern in London.
