In 1987, we were looking to move out from se London to rural Kent, but remain accessible to commuter routes as we both worked in London. We’d viewed a couple of houses in Bapchild and liked the village and how convenient it is to get to the station (6-7 mins by car).
The key features that attracted us to this house were the kitchen extension and the garden. Being the corner plot, we were surprised how much garden there is and the kitchen extension changed the whole dynamic of the house, making it stand out from others in the area.
Over the years we have landscaped the garden, introduced new trees and made a dedicated area for growing fruit and vegetables with a greenhouse, watering and re-cycling facilities. In 2001, we undertook a major re-design of the house, adding a bedroom and increasing the overall footprint. The result is a layout that really works. Bapchild has a convenience store, petrol station and fruit and veg shop, plus a village hall, pub and hotel with gym and spa, all of which have regular events. The junior school has a good reputation and has attracted many families to the village and Sittingbourne has a good selection of senior schools, including grammars.
Plenty of those living in the village have been here many years. A testament to the village as a good place to live and a base from which to enjoy the nearby countryside. It’s time for us to downsize. We’ll miss the space of the house and the garden, but have good memories of the many times that neighbours, friends and family have helped us really enjoy living here.
